When Jesus’ disciples asked Him about the sign of His coming and the end of the age, His first words were, “See that no one leads you astray.” Obviously, He knew there would come a time when religious charlatans would prey on people’s ignorance for personal gain. While I refuse to judge Harold Camping’s motives, I do believe he has deceived and confused those who blindly follow his teachings.
But my greatest concern is the damage he has done to the cause of Christ. Given the widespread notoriety of his prediction thousands now completely dismiss the doctrine of Christ’s return. How many believers laugh and joke about it instead of living in the reality of our blessed hope? Perhaps the church in America will yet grow desperate for His appearing. It’s frightening to think what it will take for that to happen. And how many unbelievers roll their eyes and think what wackos Christians are?
So this is just a reminder to you who read my humble lines. Jesus is coming again. It may be today. It may be hundreds of years. But rest assured, He is coming.
And now, dear children, remain in fellowship with Christ so that when he returns, you will be full of courage and not shrink back from him in shame. 1 John 2.28
