I want to recommend an article from the March edition of Christianity Today by John Koessler entitled “The Trajectory of Worship”. As we all know, worship styles continue to be a source of much debate and controversy. The afore mentioned article is very well written and presents a wonderful reminder that in true worship we are never the initiator and it’s never about our personal preferences. When we begin to allow particular styles to get in the way of our worship we miss an opportunity to participate in heavenly activity.
America’s greatest theologian, Jonathan Edwards, wrote, “Let it be considered that the church on earth is the same society with those saints who are praising God in heaven. There is not one church of Christ in heaven and another here upon earth.” This is why Koessler argues that our problem with worship is not aesthetics but vertigo. We need to think of worship in terms of engaging in that which is taking place in heaven at that moment and we simply join in their song.
In Koessler’s words, “The first notes are sounded by those who surround the throne in heaven. Their theme echoes through the rest of God’s domain. All that remains is for us to add our voices to their song.”
